If there is one extraordinary development that has occurred within the diamond industry in recent years, it surely must be the stunning rise of lab grown diamonds as a perfect alternative to mined natural diamonds. To bring you up to speed, we have pulled together some of the most commonly topics and questions about lab grown diamonds to help you make the best decision when looking for your next diamond ring.
What is the difference between a lab grown diamond and natural mined diamond?
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds! They have the exact same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined natural diamonds, which simply means that look, feel and are the same as their mined counterparts.
The primary difference between the two is how they are produced. Natural diamonds are mined under earth's surface and have formed over millions of years, while lab grown diamond are grown in a laboratory using a natural diamond seed. There are two methods that are used to grow lab diamonds Chemical Vapour Disposition (CVD). High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) .
The chemical vapour disposition process involves a diamond seed crystal being placed in a diamond growth chamber where it is filled with carbon containing gas. The chamber is then heated between 900 -1200 degrees celsius. A microwave beam then causes carbon to precipitate and deposit on the diamond seed crystal slowly forming the diamond. Once grown to a required size it is then cut and polished.
The HPHT method involves placing a diamond seed in a purpose built press or growth chamber where it will heated to 1300 -1600 degrees celsius combined with pressures of 870,000 pounds per inch. This then allows carbon atoms to precipitate on the diamond seed crystal and enables the lab gown diamond to grow. Once grown to a required size it will then the cut and polished.
Why are lab grown diamonds becoming so popular?
There are several factors that are fueling consumers demand for lab grown diamonds. These factors include better purchase value for lab diamonds as well as perceived environmental and ethical factors when compared to mined diamonds. Multiple consumer survey’s about customer intentions show that millennials (the target age group for diamond engagement rings) are increasingly becoming educated about the lab-grown diamonds and wanting to purchase a lab-grown diamond above a mined diamond. These changing attitudes are likely to grow rapidly as consumers gain the knowledge to make a fully informed decision.
Can a jeweller tell the difference between a lab grown diamond and a mined natural diamond?
Optically a lab grown and mined diamond look exactly the same. Many jewellers will not be able to tell the difference unless they view the diamond at 20 X magnification to see the “LG” laser inscription on the girdle of the diamond. The only other way to tell would be to send the diamond to a gemological laboratory for further testing.
What is the price difference between the two?
Lab grown diamonds are most definitely lighter on the hip pocket which explains why many customers view lab grown diamonds as a more appealing choice. Another way consumers see the value in a lab grown diamond is that they can purchase a bigger diamond for the same price. Generally speaking the higher the carat the greater the price difference between a lab grown and natural diamond.
