Why purchase solid gold over plated gold jewellery and earrings?
Solid gold is far more valuable than plated gold jewellery. Whilst solid gold has a high degree of pure gold scaled from 9 carat (37.5%) -18 carat (75%) many cheaper jewellery pieces are made with plated gold which is simply a thin film of gold that is wrapped over the jewellery piece which will wear off and expose the cheap metal (usually brass, copper, nickel) underneath over time. Depending on the plating quality gold plated jewellery often only has a lifespan of about year before the plating will start to wear off and cannot be exposed to water as this will further degrade the plating. If you are after a quality piece of jewellery that you are looking to purchase for someone as a gift or for yourself it is best to look for a solid gold jewellery piece which has a 9, 14 or 18 carat gold description.
